Today was the first Coronation Angling Club match of 2024. A friendly match to dust down the tackle. The venue was the Moat pool on the fantastic Rycroft fishery, Hemmington, Derby . After a bacon butty to start the day it was off to the draw. Peg 13 for me.

I’ve never fished this lake before so was not sure what to expect. So off to peg 13, considering my tactics for the day. I got there double-quick owing to the fact a strong wind was pushing me along. 

Arriving at the peg , the 50mph wind was pushing right to left along the lake. Fishing any longer than 2+2 was impossible and as such decided to fish the method. After an age, a bite and the first skimmer was in the net, followed by two carp and a bream and then nothing. 

Against my better judgement, out came the pole. First order was to lubricate the elastic with our pure silicon lubricant, Slippy, a great lubricant that allows the elastic to glide perfectly. The elastic comes from a new range of hybrid elastic being launched soon. 

After a fruitless period battling the elements, it was time to try the margins. They could not be any worse. At last, a bite on 4 red maggots, a gudgeon, really? Followed by a roach and then a proper bream. Things were starting to look up. 

Then bang, the float shot under and the beast was on. Our new 18 – 20 hybrid elastic soon had it under control and it was in the net. A carp of 14lb 12oz. Great, 30 minutes to go, things are looking up, let’s see if we can get another. In short no, not another bite but I am happy to end the match with a belter.

Match ended with the wind still blowing a 50mph gale, all in all a tough day in tough conditions. Ah well never mind, time to go home and look to the next match at Hacketts lakes, Nottingham.
